I have my laptop running skype and I use a Mobile Pre USB soundcard - an external box around $150. My Shure SM58 mic goes into that box and I plug my headphones into it to make sure skype sounds good and is working. Then I unplug my headphones and plug in a cable that goes to the in jack on my Marantz PMD 660 (the expensive part around $495). I then plug my headphones into the marantz to monitor the recording. I used to have a digital hybrid for my phone that was around $700, I sold it b/c it didn't sound as good as this setup.
